Within the accompanying program of our exhibition “Lost and found: Indonesian picture scroll theatre”, we organized a performance of a contemporary wayang beber held by the Indonesian artist Cahyati Praba Hardini, on 31 March 2017 in the Ethnographic museum in Zagreb.

Cahyati is a member of the Wayang beber Welingan, a contemporary wayang beber group from Surakarta. For several years the groups has been performing contemporary variations of the picture scroll theatre with a special focus on ecological problems.

Along a contemporary performance of wayang beber accompanied by gamelan instruments, Cahyati also presented the work of the Wayang beber Welingan, and the visitors interacted with the artist by asking questions about the Indonesian culture and theatre. Also, like in every traditional wayang beber play, before this performance a ritual (sesajen) has been performed.

The performance was held together with three students of the Music academy Zagreb, Sara Blažev, Lucija Novosel and Jana Blažanović who attend a gamelan classes at the Indonesian cultural center in Zagreb, organized by the Indonesian Embassy in Zagreb.

The program was held with the support of the Ministry of culture of the Republic of Croatia and the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Zagreb.
